이 논문은 플라톤의 데미우르고스 개념에 대한 중기 플라톤주의자들의 해석과 수용에 관한 연구이다. 플라톤은 후기 작품인 티마이오스에서 자신의 우주론을 전개한다. 그에 따르면, 우주는 ‘데미우르고스’라는 신적인 제작자의 노동을 통해 제작된 것이다. 데미우르고스는 가지적인 형상들을 제작의 본으로 삼아 규칙도 질서도 없이 요동치는 생성의 수용자를 강제와 설득을 통해 질서로 이끎으로써 우주를 제작했다는것이다. 플라톤 사후 데미우르고스는 다양한 방식으로 평가되거나 비판받지만, 서기 2 세기 무렵의 중기 플라톤주의 철학자들 사이에서는 데미우르고스가 특별한 지위를 점하게 된다. 데미우르고스는 가지적인 것과 감각적인 것의 매개자를 넘어 제일의 신으로 격상되며, 오히려 가지적 형상들은 데미우르고스의 사유 내지는 관념들로 간주되었던 것이다. 이렇듯 데미우르고스의 위상 변화는 플라톤주의 전통 속에서 사람들이당연시해 왔던 가지적인 것과 감각적인 구분에 관한 일정한 시선의 변화를 함축하는것으로 보인다. 본고에서는 플라톤주의 전통 속에서 대화편 티마이오스에 가장 높은 중요성을 부여했던 중기 플라톤주의자들의 데미우르고스에 대한 해석을, 대표적인중기 플라톤주의 철학자인 알키노오스의 플라톤 사상 강의를 중심으로 살펴볼 것이다.
Abstract
This paper is focused on the interpretation and reception of Plato’s concept of Demiurge by Middle Platonists. Plato develops his cosmology in the Timaeus. According to Plato, the universe was created through the labor of a divine craftsman called ‘Demiurge.’ Demiurge constitutes the universe by using intelligible forms as a model, and bringing disorderly motion into the order, the concept of Demiurge was criticized by Aristotle and other philosophers who maintained the different perspective on the cosmology. But the importance of Demiurge was reevaluated by the Middle Platonists of the 1st and 2nd centuries C.E. For them, Demiurge is not only considered as the mediator between the intelligible and the sensible, but also elevated to the highest degree and considered as the First God. Moreover, the Ideas are considered as the thoughts of Demiurge. This change of the concept of Demiurge and Ideas seems to imply that of the conception of Platonic theology. In this paper, I will examine the interpretation of the Demiurge by Middle Platonists, especially by the Didaskalikos of Alcinous, one of the Middle Platonist in 2nd century C.E.
