Abstract
Much ink has been spilled about the Recollection Argument (72e–77a) in Plato’s Phaedo. However, there is no consensus among scholars even on what kind of knowledge one can gain through recollection. In light of this, in this paper, I advocate the interpretation that the knowledge that one attains through recollection is the knowledge of the Platonic Form, rather than the knowledge of the mundane concepts of the world of our experience, under which we classify particulars in everyday speech and thought, which is the view endorsed by the majority of commentators. More specifically, first, I maintain that it is unproblematic that Recollection Argument is concerned not with every human soul but with the philosopher’s soul. This is the case, provided that (a) the context of introducing the immortality of human soul and (b) the fact that this argument is offered together with other arguments for this immortality. Moreover, I contend that the claim that when x resembles y, one who recollects y through x must consider whether y is lacking at all in relation to x makes sense only when we accept the interpretation I support. Furthermore, I claim that 74b2–3 coheres with 76c1–3 only when we accept this interpretation and that Plato, in this dialogue, distinguishes between two kinds of recollection, which bring about two respective kinds of knowledge. Finally, I rebut some scholars’ insistence that the Recollection Argument is unable to prove the pre-existence of one’s soul before one’s birth if the interpretation I support is correct.
