Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the impact of distinct sign language interpretation service delivery systems in Korea and Japan on the formation of sign language interpreters' professional identity. To this end, Q-methodology was applied to 33 Korean and 33 Japanese sign language interpreters to derive and comparatively analyze their subjective perception types. The results identified three types among Korean interpreters: 'Institutional Professional,' 'Pragmatic Practitioner,' and 'Public Service-Oriented Practitioner.' It was found that they formed an 'Organizational Self' that emphasizes their role as organizational members and social welfare responsibilities, primarily under the influence of the 'Center-based Employment Model.' In contrast, Japanese interpreters were categorized into two types: 'Ethical Neutral Professional' and 'Field-based Practitioner.' The study confirmed that a 'Professional Self,' prioritizing technical accuracy and neutrality as independent contractors, was strongly manifested through the 'Community-based Registration Model.' This study is significant in that it empirically demonstrates that the professional identity of sign language interpreters is structured by the institutional environment of the national service delivery system, beyond individual characteristics.
