Abstract
This study systematically investigates the current landscape and perceptions regarding news agencies, seeking to identify pathways for symbiotic growth between these agencies and local media outlets. By analyzing collaborative partnerships through the dual lenses of economic viability and public interest, the study provides a pragmatic perspective on how news agencies should recalibrate their roles to ensure mutual benefits. Significantly, the study highlights that with the advent of digital distribution, news agencies’ partnerships with portal sites have complicated their traditional roles. Consequently, the dynamic between local media and news agencies presents a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it allows local outlets to mitigate their shortcomings and diversify news sources. On the other hand, however, it has led to an increased dependency on news agencies, resulting in a passive media ecosystem. Therefore, in an environment of ubiquitous content competition, it is absolutely imperative for news agencies to build a collaborative framework for producing high-quality journalism. It is a critical moment to establish a virtuous cycle that guarantees the co-prosperity of both news agencies and local journalism.
