Abstract

This study aims to organize and examine the Korean linguistic history materials housed in the National Palace Museum of Korea in order to shed light on their historical and linguistic value. The museum holds a vast collection of artifacts related to the Royal Court of the Joseon Dynasty and the Imperial House of the Korean Empire, among which are numerous items of significant importance in the history of the Korean language. In this paper, the materials are classified into three categories for analysis: First, documents such as Certificates of Meritorious Subjects and Royal Protocols of the Joseon Dynasty (Uigwe) are reviewed to explore instances of Idu (Korean clerk’s script). Second, handwritten records in Hangeul produced within the royal court, including inventory lists and letters written by royal women, are investigated. Third, Hangeul inscriptions found on court-related artifacts such as wrapping cloths, patterns for court attire, and decorative wood stamps are analyzed. These materials provide valuable insights into the use of Hangeul within the royal court during the late Joseon Dynasty and the Korean Empire. In particular, one of the most distinctive types of Korean linguistic history materials at the National Palace Museum of Korea is the Hangeul inscriptions found on court artifacts. Although many Hangeul inscriptions on such artifacts are fragmentary and lack clear authorship, they convey practical information, such as their dates of production, usage, and quantities, which demonstrates their function as real-world written records used in court manufacturing contexts. As such, they hold substantial significance for studies on Korean linguistic history. By systematically organizing the linguistic resources preserved in the museum, this study offers foundational data for future research on Korean linguistic history and contributes to broadening the scope of the field.
