Abstract
This study investigates the reverse casting technique that uses metal PLA-based fused deposition modeling (FDM) with a view to the restoration and replication of metal cultural heritages. A high-resolution 3D scan of the Gukseo yuseojibo (a royal seal preserved by the National Palace Museum of Korea) was employed to generate a digital model. The artifact was printed using a bronze-filled PLA filament containing 90% metal powder, and was subsequently sintered through a controlled thermal process. The post-sintering analysis of the seal revealed a metallic sheen, a densified microstructure, and compositional fidelity to traditional bronze alloys, while X-ray radiography confirmed its uniform internal density, and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy verified its elemental consistency with bronze. Although minor defects appeared in geometrically intricate areas due to the layer-by-layer orientation of the printing process, its overall structural integrity was preserved. These findings demonstrate the feasibility of metal PLA-based reverse casting as a digitally driven, material-authentic method of replicating the metal components of a cultural heritage, offering a promising direction for heritage conservation based on the use of additive manufacturing technologies.
