Abstract

This paper shows how Aristotle considers characters in the ancient greek comedies. This study is based on the Aristotle’s Poetics and the manuscript Tractatus Coislinianus 120. According to Aristotle’s Poetics, comic characters can be defined as “phaulos” that means frivolous rather than bad or base. This quality derived from kakia is opposite to that of tragic characters defined by “spoudaios” that means serious rather than good or high derived from “aretē”. The important point underlined in this paper is that the phaulos in opposition to the spoudaios have to be qualified by characters’ attitude and behaviour inappropriate to their status and role, rather than by moral or ethical terms. In this respect, particularly on the textual bases of the Poetics and of the manuscript Tractatus Coislinianus 120, “phaulos” translated by frivolous can be defined as ridiculous.
