Abstract

The present paper deals with the problem of ‘hamartia’ as one of the difficulties raised from Aristotle’s Poetics. This problem has been a controversial issue for a long time up to this day in the opposition of two interpretative positions. One of them regards the hamartia as ‘moral fault except vice’, and so can be named “moralist”; the other regards it as ‘morally innocent cognitive error’, and so can be named “cognitivist.” It is, however, possible to take sound insights from both opposed positions and establish a ‘comprehensivist’ interpretation as a way to solve the problem of hamartia. According to this comprehensivist interpretation, the hamartia includes all the range that the two opposed positions speak of. This is confirmed by Aristotle’s discussion of the ideal tragedy in the Poetics chs. 13-14 as follows: The ch. 13 makes the requirements clear that the ideal tragedy ‘as a tragedy’ has to satisfy; in so doing it points out that the requirements are also applied to all other tragedies, and that the hamartia as one of the requirements belongs to all the tragedies; the hamartia is therefore revealed to include not only ‘morally innocent cognitive error’ but also ‘moral fault except vice.’ On the other hand, the ch. 14 makes the requirements clear that the ideal tragedy ‘as an ideal tragedy’ has to satisfy; in so doing it points out that of the range of hamartia revealed in ch. 13 ‘the morally innocent cognitive error’ is suitable for the ideal tragedy. Though it is so restricted for the ideal tragedy, the hamartia is revealed throughout chs. 13-14 to belong also to all other tragedies and include also ‘the moral fault except vice’.
