Abstract
The date when Trachiniai was written has been hotly debated and considered as a notorious problem. The other controversy on Trachiniai is about the description of non-deification of Heracles in this work: in the end, Heracles faces a miserable death far from the heroic one or deification. This paper is to reconsider the date of the Trachiniai and the reason of the description of miserable death of Heracles without any hint of deification. I argue that this tragedy was performed around 426 B.C. when Sparta established a new colonial city of Heracleia founded on former Trachis region. According to Thucydides, Sparta intended to establish Heracleia, a new colony near Athens to take advantage to attack Athens- hoping this newborn pro-Spartan city could be used as a naval base against Athens. As for Athenians, this city named after Heracles, the hero-king of Sparta, seemed to become a big trouble to them. Thus, the Athenians tried to attack Sparta psychologically and ideologically by lowering Heracles and his family through this tragedy. This is the reason why Heracles is described far from a hero, but just a lustful strong man who does not take care of his family at all, attacks a country without any reasonable cause but only for his lust toward a princess, cries like a woman in agony, wounded by a mere woman, and faces miserable death in the end.
