Abstract
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Chinese international students studying abroad faced complex psychosocial challenges due to the threat of COVID-19 and new educational environments resulting from the pandemic. This study explored psychosocial difficulties and service needs among Chinese international students due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted in-depth interviews with 20 Chinese international students living in Korea and identified four subthemes and 11 subthemes using thematic analysis. The results of the study showed that Chinese international students reported psychosocial difficulties in overarching themes related to “psychological stress resulting from preventive measures of COVID-19,” “struggles of daily life in a foreign country during COVID-19,” “concerns about study outcomes as the COVID-19 pandemic persisted,” and “service needs of Chinese international students during the COVID-19 pandemic.” This study highlighted the need for psychological counseling, mentoring, and self-help groups to alleviate Chinese students’ anxiety related to COVID-19 risk and address various psychosocial difficulties they face in their daily lives and academic trajectories.
