재한 중국인 유학생의 대학생활 적응에 대한 질적 연구

본 연구는 문화적응적 관점에서 한국사회 내 지속적으로 증가하고 있는 중국인 유학생의 대학생활에 대한 적응을 알아보았다. 즉, 적응과정과 적응에 주요 영향을 미치는 변인들을 탐색해보고자 하였으며, 이를 통해 적응유형화 분석을 실시하였다. 이에 30명의 재한 중국인 유학생을 심층면접 하였고 근거이론방법론을 사용하여 분석하였다. 그 결과, 중국인 유학생들이 경험한 한국대학생활 적응의 중심현상은 정서적 불안정, 소외감, 어려움으로 복합-부정적 정서 특징을 보였다. 과정분석을 실시한 결과, 중국인 유학생의 한국대학생활 적응과정은 혼란, 회피, 극복-노력, 현실수용 총 4단계과정이었다. 혼란단계에서는 적응을 방해하는 개인-부정적 장애물을 사용함과 동시에 한국사회를 부정적으로 평가하였고, 회피단계에서는 한국사회에 대한 긍정적인 측면을 처음으로 인식하기 시작하였다. 극복-노력단계와 현실수용단계에서는 개인-긍정적 자원과 사회-긍정적 자원을 활용함으로써 적극적인 해결방법을 통해 긍정적인 적응단계로 발전해갔다. 또한, 한국문화 적응-부적응, 학업 추구-비추구 두 차원에 의하여 유형화 분석을 시도한 결과 혼란부적응형, 문화수용형, 학위추구형, 자아성장형으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 연구의 의의와 제한점 및 추후연구에 대한 방향을 논의하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of the present study is to assess how well international undergraduates from China adjust themselves to academic life in South Korea and to identify factor, both psychological and social, which exert influences upon their adjustments. In this study, semi-structured interviews were conducted to 30 participants and their responses were analyzed on the basis of the Grounded Theory developed Strauss & Corbin(1990). The results indicated that the core feelings participants experienced in the course of academic adjustment in South Korea could be grouped into 4 categories: Emotional unbalance, alienation and difficulties. Further, analysis of processes international undergraduates from China went through in their adjustment to South Korea revealed that there were four phases in academic adjustment: Confusion, evasion, efforts to overcome, and self acceptance. Analysis of factors influencing adjustment revealed that there were a paucity of resources, personal and social as well, in the confusion and evasion phrase, whereas lots of resources were available in the efforts to overcome and the self acceptance phrase. Finally, participants were divided into four types of adjustment according to the dimensions of culture adaptation and pursuit of academic progress: Confusion maladaptation, cultural reception, the pursuit of degree, and self-growth. Finally, the findings were discussed in relation to relevant theories and research, and their implications for cultural adjustment and limitations of the present study were suggested.
