및 결언이 연구는 사회과 교사들이 갖고 있는 특성에 따라 사회과 본질에 대한 관점이 어떻게 차이가 나는지를 밝히고자 하였다. 분석 결과, 사회과 교사들의 성별, 연령, 교직 경력, 교원 단체 가입 등의 특성에 따라 사회과 본질에 대한 인식이 유의하게 차이가 있었다. 사회과 교사들의 전공 영역과 자율 연구회 활동 등의 특성에 따라서도 사회과 본질에 대한 관점의 차이가 부분적으로 나타났다. 또한 분석 결과를 종합해 볼 때, 사회 비판은 진보적인 성향의 교사들이, 시민성 전달은 보수적인 성향의 교사들이 선호하는 경향이 높은 것으로 해석할 수 있었다.교사는 교육과정의 최종 해석자이자 조율자이며, 교사가 해당 교과의 본질을 어떻게 인식하고 있느냐에 따라 교수학습의 과정에 큰 영향을 준다. 따라서 교사의 특성이나 교사의 교과의 본질에 대한 이해를 주제로 한 연구는 교과 교육 연구의 기초라고 할 수 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 지금까지 한국 사회과 교육의 연구에서 이 부분에 대한 연구가 활발하게 진행되지 못하였음을 부인할 수 없다. 다행히도 최근에 이 주제에 대한 관심이 지속적으로 확대되고 있는 것은 환영할 만한 일이다. 앞으로의 여러 차원의 후속 연구를 통해 사회과 교육의 실행 주체로서 교사에 대한 이해의 폭이 더욱 넓어질 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
ABSTRACT How Are Social Studies Teachers' Characteristics Related to their Perspectives on the Nature of Social Studies Education ? Park, Hyung-joon (Sungshin Women's University) This follow-up study of Park (2005) was conducted to explore the relation of secondary social studies teachers' characteristics to their perspectives on the nature of social studies education. Social studies teachers' characteristics were analyzed respectively by gender, age, a number of years in teaching, location of workplace, major subject, types of pre-service teacher education track, participation in teacher study group, and membership of teachers' association. The perspectives of the nature of social studies education were categorized as citizenship transmission, social science, reflective inquiry, informed social criticism, and personal development. This study was based on a national survey of 500 high school social studies teachers. The data were analyzed with crosstabulations and chi-square tests. The result showed that, on one side, according to gender, age, a number of years in teaching, and membership of teachers' association, the teachers' perspectives on the nature of social studies were significantly different. On the other side, the variables such as location of workplace, major subject, types of pre-service teacher education track, and participation in teacher study group were not statistically significant. It was also found that while conservative teachers tend to identify themselves more with the perspective of social studies as citizenship transmission, progressive teachers more with the perspective of social studies as informed social criticism.
