Abstract
This replication study of Vinson (1998) was conducted to explore Korean secondary social studies teachers' conceptions about Martorella's framework of 'alternative perspectives on citizenship education.' This study was based on a national survey of 500 high school social studies teachers. The data were analyzed with chi-square tests and crosstabulations. It is one of the major findings that, similar to what Vinson found, the research subjects identified more strongly with the perspectives of social studies as reflective inquiry, as informed social criticism, and as personal development, than with the perspectives of social studies as citizenship transmission and as social science. But this tendency was more conspicuous in Korean teachers than in American ones. Secondly, the preference for social studies as informed social criticism was higher in Korean subjects by 20% than in American ones. Meanwhile, Korean subjects' preference for social studies as personal development was a half of that of American ones. This study also indicates that while Korean teachers were likely to uphold social studies as informed social criticism implicitly, they seemed to support social studies as reflective inquiry explicitly. The findings from this study imply the effect of idiosyncratic socio-historical contexts of Korea in the second half of 20th century on the shape of social studies teachers' conceptions about citizenship education.
