Abstract

In Korea, the shrinking size of families, an increase in dual-income couples, and long working hours have lead to an exacerbation of the child care burden on working parents. Consequently, the importance of non-parental child care (child care services, center-based care, family child care, etc.) has grown significantly. Non-parental child care has provided a critical environment for healthy child development. In particular, the use of multiple child care arrangements can influence child development by providing (un)stable child care environment. However, research on this topic was scarce. Based on the second Korea Early Childhood Education and Care Panel, this study examined the association between multiple child care arrangements and child development (cognitive, language, and social skills development in 1-year-old). This study also explored whether these associations varied by mother's employment status, household income, and type of child care. In the sample, 11% of children relied on multiple child care settings. We found that multiple child care arrangements did not affect children's language development compared to parental care. However, they positively influenced language and social skills development. The positive impact of multiple child care on their language development was stronger for mothers working full-time positions. Based on these findings, implications for child care policy were discussed.
