성 소수자 관련 이슈에 대한 청소년들의 생각 : 다문화 시민 교육에의 시사점을 중심으로

초록

이 연구는 성 소수자 관련 이슈들에 대한 우리 사회 청소년들의 의견을 확인하고 이에 내재한 포용과 배제의 논리를 이해하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 서울 지역의 중학교와 고등학교 학생 32명을 대상으로 초점 집단 면접을 수행하고 이를 질적 방법으로 분석하였다. 주요 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저, 동성애와 관련하여, 학생들 대부분이 자연스러운 감정이자 개인의 권리라는 수용적인 입장을 제시한 반면, 일부 학생들은 이해하기 어려운 잘못된 선택이라는 부정적인 입장을 제시하였다. 다음으로 동성 결혼 합법화에 대해서는 개인의 권리이자 과도기적인 혼란은 극복 대상이라는 긍정적인 입장과 사회 안정에 부정적이고 시기상조라는 부정적인 입장으로 양분되었다. 마지막으로 동성 커플의 입양 및 자녀 양육과 관련하여, 동성 부부 자녀가 겪게 될 어려움과 부모됨의 결함을 이유로 반대하는 입장이 우세한 가운데, 가족의 사랑과 유대 관계를 더 강조하는 소수의 입장이 제시되었다. 이상의 연구 결과를 바탕으로 우리 사회 청소년들이 성 소수자 관련 이슈들에 대해 사안에 따라 복합적인 사고를 형성하고 있으며, 사적 영역을 넘어선 제도화된 시민적 권리의 영역에서 ‘이성 부모-자녀로 구성된 가족의 정상성 규범’이 성 소수자에 대한 배제의 논리로 작동하고 있음을 확인하였다. 이를 바탕으로 다문화 시민 교육에 대한 시사점을 제시하였다.

Abstract

This study aims to explore adolescents’ ideas on the issues related to sexual minorities and understand the assumptions and rationale behind their opinions. Thirty-two secondary school students in Seoul participated in a focus group interview, and the interview data was analyzed using a qualitative method. The study results are as follows: First, most students had accepting attitudes toward homosexuality based on the belief that homosexuality is a natural emotion and should be respected as an individual right. A few students who had a negative view of homosexuality indicated that homosexuality is abnormal and results from a wrong personal choice. Second, regarding legalizing same-sex marriage, students who favored the legalization argued that same-sex marriage is an individual right and that any disorder during the transition period for the legalization of same-sex marriage must be overcome. On the other hand, students in opposition suggested that the legalization is untimely because negative attitudes toward sex minorities are still prevalent in society. Lastly, regarding the adoption and parenting of same-sex couples, most students had an unfavorable opinion; they were worried the adopted children would be bullied and raised by dysfunctional parents of an abnormal family. Only a few students emphasized love and family bonding more than parents’ sexual orientation. This study shows that adolescents have complex attitudes regarding the issues related to sexual minorities. Furthermore, the study presents that the idea of a normative family, consisting of heterosexual parents and their children, works as the logic behind the exclusion of sexual minorities in the realm of institutionalized civil rights. Based on the results, the study provides suggestions for multicultural citizenship education.
