Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the validity and reliability evidences of the Yamax Digiwalker SW650 and Omron HJ-113 pedometer, which could count steps taken even when worn at difference locations on body and difference step speed. Fifteen female adults(162±4cm, 52.93±8.62kg) were participated in this study after consent was received. Subjests were asked to wear and walked 2 type pedometers in 3 lab based walking conditions(4.8km⋅h, 6.4km⋅h, 9.7km⋅h) and a free living condition. For comparison, they also wore at 8 different locations on body. Among the 3 walking conditions, only 9.7km⋅h walking condition indicated a low agreement between actual count and all other pedometer counts. While the mean difference between the pedometer counts and actual counts were similar during 4.8km⋅h, 6.4km⋅h conditions. Also, percent error was greatest in 9.7km⋅h walking condition. In free living condition, there were high intramodal agreement coefficient. This threat to validity is likely problematic when using the pedometer to assess physical activity in young & diverse pattern individuals who involved physical education & leisure activity.
