Abstract
The present study is to examine the validity of Wearable Insole by comparing the steps measured on the criterion measures (i.e., Manual counter and the Pedometer). Twenty-five participants in the study walked for three minutes at seven different speeds (from 1.5 km/h to 7.5 km) and rested for two minutes on the treadmill. Also, the steps were measured at three different speeds (normal, slower speed than normal, and faster speed than normal) on the overground, and the steps in free-living were also measured for up to 6 hours with the pedometer. In all conditions, except for 3.5 km/h of the treadmill and faster speed than normal on overground, steps measured by Wearable Insole showed significant differences with the criterion measure (p<.01). In addition, moderate correlations (range from 0.30 to 0.84) were found in most conditions except 1.5 km/h, and higher mean absolute percentage errors (range from 6.48% to 13.11% were found as the speed increased. Consistent with the previous study, there was a large deviation in the agreements between the two measures in free-living and the overground conditions, and Wearable Insole showed inconsistent using the equivalence test with the criterion measures. Therefore, the wearable insole utilized in this study do not provide sufficient evidence to support the validity in assessing the step counts. Further studies are necessary to examine the validity using more accurate criterion measures with a larger sample size in the controlled setting.
