Abstract
The purposes of this study was to conduct the systematic review of validity evidences of objective physical activity measures focusing on accelerometers and pediments. It was also introduced how to conduct the validation study utilizing the objective physical activity measure. To ensure the content related validity, the measurement specialist collected 1346 articles using the key words including physical activity assessments, validity, accuracy, accelerometer, and pedometer. Then the experts selected the articles based on the citation index, systematic review, and randomized studies for this study. After summarizing validity evidences and validation procedures, key points of conducting physical activity promotion researches while using objective measures are: 1) The researchers should check the accuracy of the measures selected for their research populations even though the validity evidence was previously provided due to the individual and population variabilities. 2) The participants should wear the objective measurers at least 5-6 days/week and 10 hours/day to obtain reliable amounts of physical activity. 3) The cut-points of physical activity intensity and epoch length of accelerometer should be differently applied for adults and children. The epoch lengths are preferred to 15 sec for children and 1 minute for adults, respectively. 4) Wearing positions, such as waist or hips, are the most accurate positions for obtaining accurate data from both of pedometer and accelerometer. 5) The pedometer is affected by the walking speed. Before utilizing the pedometer, the researcher should check walking speed of the target population first.
