Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine hourly ambulatory patterns for sedentary women between weekdays and weekends. A total of 106 sedentary women were recruited for this study (27.2±3.1 yrs.; 20.0±1.9 kg/m2). The number of steps was measured by Yamax pedometer (SW-650), and the data were collected through the cell phone and text messaging every hour from 9am to 10pm over seven days, including weekends (i.e., 5 weekdays and 2 weekends). Descriptive statistics, including steps/hour mean and standard deviation, were calculated between weekdays and weekends. In addition, tests of within-subject contrast(polynomial) using SPSS were used to determine trends of hourly ambulatory patterns. The average number of steps was 588±128 steps/hour (ranged from 416 to 791) in weekdays and 477±87 steps/hour (ranged from 271 to 614) in weekends. Tests of within-subject contrast(polynomial) results showed that the hourly ambulatory patterns for sedentary women were somewhat linear as gradually increased shape in weekdays and quadratic as inversed U shape in weekends, respectively. Identifying hourly physical activity pattern is crucial because it helps diagnosis physical activity intervention program, provide individual feedback, and design effective physical activity intervention.
