Abstract

This study was performed to confirm the effect of adolescent’s civic media literacy on the judgment behavior in the context of partisan fake news. For the study, a survey was conducted targeting students from the first year of middle school to the third year of high school in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, and 1,344 questionnaires were analyzed. Research was divided into two parts. First, the impact on the judgment behavior in the context of partisan fake news by civic media literacy sub-competencies was examined, and second, after confirming the type of civic media literacy of adolescents, the difference in the judgment behavior in the context of partisan fake news by types was confirmed. The research results are as follows. First, among the sub-competencies of civic media literacy, the ability to exclude harmful media had a positive effect on the judgment behavior regarding partisan fake news, while public participation had a negative effect. Second, the types of civic media literacy of adolescent are ‘average type(group 1)’, ‘active participation type(group 2)’, ‘risk coping type(group 3)’, ‘risk-vulnerable type(group 4)’, and ‘critically excluding participation type(group 5)’ and ‘self-centered participation type(group 6)’. Third, as a result of verifying differences in the judgment behavior in the context of partisan fake news by types of civic media literacy of adolescent, the critically excluding participation type(group 5) was better than the average type(group 1), the active participation type(group 2), the risk-vulnerable type(group 4), and the self-centered participation type(group 6). These research findings lead to the following implications. First, a specific educational discussion should be held to address the issue of partisan fake news, focusing on building competencies to exclude harmful media. Second, it is necessary to consider ‘public participation’, a competency recommended in civic education, when using media. Third, customized education should be provided according to the characteristics of adolescent’s civic media literacy.
