Abstract
This study investigates the relationship between FDI inflows and the gender wage gap at the province level in Vietnam, one of the major FDI hosts. Vietnam adopts a market-oriented economy and continues to grow with FDI as one of its growth engines, but maintains a socialist system and places value on equality, particularly gender equality. Using publicly available data from General Statistics Office for the period 2011-2022 of 63 provinces, a fixed-effects panel analysis estimates a negative relationship between FDI and the gender wage gap, driven by the negative relationship estimated for rural areas, while no statistically significant relationship was estimated for urban. Given that FDI firms in Vietnam tend to hire female workers, the analysis of the urban-rural wage gap of male and female workers finds a negative relationship between FDI and the urban-rural wage gap for female workers. With estimation results above and Vietnam's FDI policies and situations, this study concludes that female labor in rural areas has benefited the most from FDI in terms of wage gap
