자연중심기술과 환경철학의 새로운 관점 모색

환경 문제는 인류의 주요 현안 가운데 하나이며, 그동안 철학적으로도 중요한 논쟁들을 생산해 냈다. 인간중심주의와 탈인간중심주의로 대별되는 환경철학 양대진영의 다양한 논의들은 환경운동을 유발하고, 환경에 대한 세계적인 관심을 불러일으키고, 오염을 줄이고 환경을 보존할 필요성을 대중들에게 인식시키는 데는 기여하였지만, 환경 문제 해결의 길로 우리를 안내하고 있는지는 의심스럽다. 탈인간중심주의, 즉 생명중심주의와 생태중심주의는 환경에 대한 관심을 촉구하는데 기여하기는 했지만 옹호하기 어려운 주장들을 내놓았다. 그렇다고 해서 바로 인간중심주의적 관점이 대안이라고 말할 수도 없을 듯싶다. 전통적인 인간중심적 가치관, 자연을 인간의 쾌락과 복지를 위한 수단, 지배와 정복의 대상으로만 간주하는 관점은 화이트 등의 주장처럼 인간중심주의가 환경 문제의 한 원인이라는 비판으로부터 자유롭지 않을 듯하다. 이 글은 환경과 인간의 존재론적 지위, 자연의 내재적 가치 여부, 미래세대의 권리 등을 쟁점으로 삼았던 기존의 시각에서 벗어나 기술에 대한 이해와 인간 자신과 인간의 지식에 대한 이해 방식에서 환경 문제를 다시 보려고 한다. 이 글은 환경위기를 철저하게 인간의 위기로 규정하고, 환경 문제의 주요 원인을 기술에 대한 근대적 이해에서 발견한다. 생물모방학에서 영감을 얻은 기술에 대한 새로운 이해, 인간 자신과 인간의 지식에 대한 적절한 반성을 통해 환경 문제 해결을 위한 실질적인 길이 모색될 수 있을 것이라고 기대한다. 기술을 제대로 이해한다면, 기술은 인간을 자연으로부터 떼어놓는 수단이 아니라 오히려 인간을 자연에 가깝게 만드는 수단이라는 것을 알게 될 것이다. 인간은 자연으로부터 끊임없이 배우는 자이며, 자연을 지배하고 관리하는 자일 수 없다는 점을 통찰할 때 우리의 기술은 자연에 고통을 주는 기술이 아니라 자연과 조화하는 기술이 될 수 있고, 환경 문제도 해결의 길에 들어 설 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
The problems of environment is one of the question at issue on the earth. Environmental problems have been discussed and debated philosophically from various perspectives. Generally, most thoughts on environmental issues are classified under two main different camp, i.e. anthropocentrism and non-anthropocentrism. These two camps produced many issues on environment and debated on these issues, that is intrinsic values, status of human being in nature, rights of animal and living organism, need for new ethical theories, etc. Non-anthropocentrism, including biocentrism and ecocentrism, brought people’s attention on environmental issues, and put forward claims that was hard to be justified. But that doesn’t mean anthropocentrism have to be adopted. Traditional anthropocentrism is not free from criticisms as Lynn White Ⅲ's. White asserted that anthropocentrism, which was characterized as human values, instrumentalization of nature, nature as object of conquer and control, hierarchy of beings on earth, was a main cause of environmental problems. This article will view the environmental problem from a consideration on the conception of technology and knowledge, which is strange in existing discussions. But I think we can see a possibility to find a right direction through a new perspective, in order to solve the environmental problems. In this article I will make clear the meaning of environmental crisis as a human crisis, and I can discover the cause of environmental problems in the modern conception of technology, which I think as our misunderstanding and the source of our failure to have a correct attitude to nature. The new conception of technology inspired by biomimetics lead us to the reflection on human being ourself and the nature of our knowledge. On reflection, our knowledge and technology is not great as we imagine until now. Our knowledge and technology is limited and low level. Technologies of nature and living organisms are superior to ours. Through the correction of our conception on technology and knowledge about nature, we can change our attitude to our environment, including nature itself and living organisms. We can change mind concerning our position in the earth from the conqueror and controller to a learner who listens to the teachings from nature. Our technology and knowledge can be used to harmonize with nature, not to cause pain to nature.
