Building and Using Translation-Tagged Corpus for Developing Bilingual Dictionaries -Focusing on ‘停’ for Chinese-Korean Dictionary-

In this paper, a systematic method on building and using translation-tagged corpus is proposed for adding translation equivalents to bilingual dictionaries. Inaccuracies and insufficiencies of definitions and translations in existing bilingual dictionaries of Korean and other languages often cause the bilingual dictionaries to fail to function as active dictionaries. This problem is due to the conventional editing method of publishing dictionaries: adding translations to monolingual dictionaries of source languages. This study selected the entry word ‘停’ from one Chinese-Korean dictionary as an example in order to identify problems with translations in existing bilingual dictionaries. Using this example, this study also attempted to build and analyze a translation-tagged corpus to suggest new methods of presenting translations. This study is meaningful because, throughout the process, it suggested fresh implications for the publication of bilingual dictionaries, added new translations,and corrected the errors of existing dictionaries.
