The current study proposes a methodology on the word compiling of a multilingual Korean learner's dictionary. As part of the web-based Korean Dictionary Project, the multilingual Korean learner's dictionary offers a Korean Monolingual dictionary for advanced learners and its translation in 5 different languages: Russian, Mongolian, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Thai. In the first section of the paper, we attempt to seek the ideal model of an advanced Korean learner's dictionary by providing a prototype of definitions and translations in the learner's dictionary. We also argue for the advantages of the semi-bilingual dictionary in which both the monolingual Korean dictionary and its translation in the learner's native language are offered. In this study, we describe our method of selecting entries, the micro structure of the dictionary and methodology of translation along with other principles of compiling a dictionary. In particular, from the perspective of contrastive lexicography, we emphasize the importance of dual translation in which both the entry and its definition are translated. Finally, we discuss the remaining problems concerning the redundancy, efficacy and accuracy of the translation. This study can be contributed to providing a prototype of a Korean learner's dictionary and its translation in multi-languages.
