The purpose of the research is to analyze the main Japanese dictionaries from the Meiji to the modern period and explore what values are found and emphasized in these dictionaries. The analyzed dictionaries include Genkai (1891), Dainihon-kokugo-jiten (1918), Jien (1951), Nihon-kokugo-daijiten (1976). In conclusion, the finding shows a pursuit of the establishment of modern Japan and its national culture on the basis of compiling the Japanese dictionaries for about 100 years. Nowadays, the printing type is easily converted into a code, and the paper dictionaries have become the electronic ones. In accordance with these changing trends, there is a need to find new values of national language dictionary. The transformation of Japanese dictionary is expected in this new era, which will become another interesting issue.
Abstract
