A Study on the Revision of an Elementary Korean Dictionary Following National Curriculum Redevelopment

This study aims to show the process of revising an elementary Korean dictionary using the case of Yonsei Korean elementary dictionary. As the governmental curriculum changes throughout the years, it is crucial for the dictionaries to be revised to better reflect the words in new textbooks. To present the procedure of the revision, this study will use the example of the 4th Yonsei Korean elementary dictionary, comparing it to other elementary dictionaries. Compared to other elementary dictionaries, Yonsei Korean elementary dictionary contains relatively large amount of words (around 40,000 words) and presents them with the information of word class, pronunciation, and conjugation forms. The 4th Yonsei Korean elementary dictionary was revised to suit the characteristics. For the revision, new words in the textbooks and related words were added to reflect every textbook used in the elementary school. Additionally, words from the textbooks were presented with the subject the words appear to aid students’ learning.
