Abstract

The legend of Gija Joseon(箕子朝鮮) did not emerge until approximately 1,100 years after the presumed lifetime of Gija(箕子). Although these traditions have been transmitted through various narratives, their internal contradictions and lack of historical plausibility make them difficult to regard as factual history. In the late Joseon(朝鮮) period, doubts regarding the authenticity of these traditions began to surface. The earliest criticism was directed at the Gija subongseol(箕子受封設)-the theory that King Wu(武王) of the Zhou(周) dynasty had enfeoffed Gija in Joseon. This critique developed through close readings of classical texts and logical reasoning based on historical context. Traditions and relics related to Gija were found not only in mainland China but also in the Liaoxi(遼西) and Liaodong(遼東) regions. Upon encountering such materials, Joseon scholars began to interpret Gija’s eastward migration as a gradual movement carried out by his descendants over generations, rather than by Gija himself. With the development of modern historiography, the theory of Gija Joseon was comprehensively rejected. Against the historical backdrop of large-scale Chinese migration during the Qin(秦) and Han(漢) dynasties and the long-term existence of the Lelang(樂浪) Commandery, many scholars argued that the Gija Joseon narrative was a fabricated story created by exiled Han Chinese. While Chinese academia still tends to accept Gija Joseon as a historical reality, mainstream scholarship in Korea and Japan generally regards it as a fictional tradition lacking historical substance. The long-standing emphasis on Gija Joseon as historical fact illustrates how traditional historiography was closely tied to ideological frameworks. The modern critique and rejection of this narrative reflect the collapse of traditional historical perspectives and the emergence of a modern historical consciousness.
