Abstract

This study investigates perceptions of Kija (箕子) and Kija Joseon (箕子朝鮮) during the Liao (遼), Jin (金), and Yuan (元) dynasties, before the theory of Kija Joseon became institutionalized within the official framework of Korean history during the early Chosŏn dynasty. Originating in the Han dynasty, the Kija Joseon theory was employed during the Sui and Tang as a justification for campaigns against Koguryŏ, and in the Song period, it was adapted to bolster civilizational superiority and as part of the diplomatic rhetoric toward Koryŏ. This paper examines how such perceptions were inherited and transformed across the Liao, Jin, and Yuan dynasties. Geographical treatises such as the Geography section of the Liaoshi and the Jin-dynasty Liaodong Xingbu Zhi portray Kija as a Confucian civilizer and accept the historicity of Kija Joseon in narrating the historical evolution of the Liaodong region. Additionally, during the Jin dynasty, critical reflections on the Kija tradition were presented by literati such as Wang Ruoxu (王若虛). However, unlike in the Song, attempts to directly connect Koryŏ with Kija Joseon were relatively limited in the Liao and Jin dynasties, appearing primarily in diplomatic contexts related to territorial discourse. During the Yuan dynasty, perceptions of Kija were reframed within a hybrid environment shaped by the Confucian legacy of the Song and the Mongol-centered world order. Historical works such as the Yuanshi (元史) and Wenxian Tongkao (文獻通考) continued the narrative that linked Kija Joseon with the origins of Koryŏ. By designating Koryŏ as the domain where Kija was enfeoffed, these works solidified the historical basis for the "civilizing of the East" within the framework of the Confucian ideological order. Notably, the Jewang Un-gi (帝王韻紀) of this period interpreted Old Joseon as consisting of an Earlier Joseon ruled by Tan’gun and a Later Joseon ruled by Kija, thereby incorporating Kija Joseon into the system of Korean history for the first time in Korean literature. From this point forward, Kija Joseon was increasingly accepted as a tangible historical reality within Koryŏ society. This marked an internal strategy aimed at legitimizing Koryŏ’s status within the Yuan-centered international order and in the context of adopting Neo-Confucian orthodoxy. Furthermore, the geographical conception of Kija Joseon expanded during the Yuan to encompass not only Lelang but also the wider Liaodong region, and the tradition of Kija’s origin in the Chinese heartland persisted alongside the Kija Joseon theory.
