Abstract

South and North Korean historians first met in 1972 during an on-site investigation of the Takamatsu Tomb in Nara, Japan. The following year, they met at the International Congress of Orientalists (ICAS) in Paris, later at the International Congress of Historical Sciences (ICHS) in 1980, and again at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Association for Asian Studies (MARAAS) conference in 1985. The background of these four exchanges can be attributed to two factors: internally, both South and North Korea had accumulated their own research achievements and developed heightened interest in each other’s work; externally, changes in international and inter-Korean relations, particularly the détente sparked by the U.S.–China rapprochement, opened a channel for inter-Korean dialogue and created conditions for historians to meet. Even during the late Cold War period, historians from both Koreas continued to meet at the International Congress of Historical Sciences and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Association for Asian Studies conferences. At the last conference, a special panel was organized in which historians from South Korea, North Korea, and the United States presented and discussed a single topic together, marking a significant step forward. Such exchanges were made possible in the broader context of ongoing dialogues between the two Koreas at multiple levels. These early interactions laid the groundwork for the more frequent and diverse forms of inter-Korean historical exchanges that began to unfold in the late 1980s.
