본 연구는 자유전공학부 신입생이 경험하는 교수 상담의 효과성을 실증적으로 규명하고자 한다. 구체적으로 ‘교수 상담 만족도’가 ‘대학 몰입’을 매개로 하여 ‘전공 선택 확신도’에 미치는 구조적 영향 관계를 규명하는 것이 본 연구의 목적이다. 이를 위해, 부산 소재 A대학교 자유전공학부 신입생 125명을 대상으로 한 설문조사를 바탕으로, 다양한 통계 분석을 수행하였다. 분석 결과, 첫째, 교수 상담 만족도는 대학 몰입에 유의미한 정적 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다(β = .377, p < .01). 둘째, 대학 몰입은 전공 선택 확신도에도 유의미한 정적 영향을 미쳤다(β = .469, p < .001). 셋째, 대학 몰입이 교수 상담 만족도와 전공 선택 확신도의 관계에서 유의미한 부분 매개효과를 가지는 것으로 확인되었다(Z = 2.84, p < .01). 이러한 결과는 교수 상담이 단순한 정보 제공을 넘어, 학생의 정서적 안정, 학업 몰입, 자기 주도적 진로 탐색을 유도하여, 전공 선택에 관한 확신을 강화하는 중요한 경로로 작용함을 시사한다. 따라서 본 연구는 자유전공학부 신입생의 성공적인 대학 적응과 진로 설계를 지원하기 위해, 일회성이 아닌 체계적이고 지속적인 맞춤형 상담 프로그램의 운영이 필요함을 강조한다.
Abstract
This study aims to empirically examine the effectiveness of faculty advising as experienced by first-year students. Specifically, it investigates the structural relationship between faculty advising satisfaction and major selection confidence, with college engagement as a mediating variable. To this end, a survey was conducted with 125 first-year students in the Division of Undeclared Majors at University A in Busan, and various statistical analyses were employed. The results revealed the following: First, faculty advising satisfaction had a significant positive effect on college engagement (β = .377, p < .01). Second, college engagement positively influenced major selection confidence (β = .469, p < .001). Third, college engagement was found to partially mediate the relationship between faculty advising satisfaction and major selection confidence (Z = 2.84, p < .01). These findings suggest that faculty advising serves as a crucial mechanism that enhances students’ confidence in selecting a major—not merely by providing information, but by promoting emotional support, academic engagement, and self-directed career exploration. Accordingly, this study underscores the importance of implementing systematic, ongoing, and personalized advising programs to support the academic adjustment and career planning of first-year students in undeclared major programs.
