디지털 시대, 그림책과 아동문학에 나타난 구술 서사의 귀환

작가 이수지는 ‘글 없는 그림책’은 대화로 가득 찬 매우 시끄러운 책이라고 말한다. 쓴다는 것은 말을 공간에 멈추는 일이다. 출판인쇄술이 발달하기 전에 존재했던 일차적 구술문화는 디지털 시대를 맞이하여 이차적 구술문화로 이동하고 있다. 어린이는 예로부터 구술문화의 적극적인 향유자였다. 새로운 구술성의 시대를 맞이하여 글 없는 그림책과 구술 서사적 특성이 강조된 아동문학 작품들이 다시 등장하면서 어린이 독자의 책읽기 경험이 말하기와 이야기 만들기의 방향으로 변화하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 그림책, 특히 글 없는 그림책에서 발견할 수 있는 1차적 구술성과 아동문학 작품의 역사에서 특징적으로 드러났던 구술 서사의 경향을 살펴보고 그림책, 특히 어린이들의 글 없는 그림책 읽기에서 발견할 수 있는 구술적 연행에 대해서 알아본다. 디지털 미디어 리터러시와 관련해 최근 그림책과 아동문학 작품을 둘러싸고 새롭게 등장하는 독자들의 구술적 취향과 연행의 양식을 분석한다. 디지털 미디어 시대 신인 작가들이 창작한 아동문학 작품에 나타난 새로운 서사적 경향을 분석하면서 미디어 리터러시는 동화의 서사에 어떤 영향을 주는지 살펴본다. 그리고 구술적 연행의 공동체성을 짚어보고 아동에게 문학적 구술의 경험이 주는 의미를 밝힌다.
Abstract
The artist Suzy Lee says that a silent book is a very loud book full of dialogues. To write is to stop a word in space. The primary oral culture, which existed before the development of print publication, is moving to the secondary oral culture in the digital age. This paper examines the primary orality found in picture books, especially silent books and the trends of oral narratives that are characteristic of the history of children’s literature. Also it learns about children’s oral performance while reading silent books. Some Korean picture books have shown significant achievements in the silent book genre. Silent books breaking down the boundaries of words and sympathizing with pictures are becoming literary basis for children and adolescent readers around the world trying to communicate beyond the barriers of translation. With regard to media literacy in particular, this study analyzes the oral tastes and performance manner of readers newly emerging around picture books and children’s literature. It examines how the media literacy in digital era affects the narrative of children’s stories in terms of the communal character of oral performance. This reveals the meaning of literary oral experience given to the child. Children and adolescents learn about the real world from books and can start to imagine a future world. Books also provide answers to philosophical questions such as “How will I live in the future?” Young readers’ interest lies in the upcoming changes. In that sense, they are the future readers who come with questions from far away. The purpose of this paper is to lay the groundwork for basic analysis of literary experience of future readers living in the present digital age.
