Abstract
This study examines the syntactic functions of stative adjectives with the ‘XA’ modifying structure and observes that, while their use as attributives, adverbials, or complements is less restricted, their use as predicates is subject to stronger constraints. The reasons for this phenomenon are explored, and the mechanisms underlying their predicative use are analyzed from the perspective of information structure. According to this study, ‘XA’ stative adjectives, like qualitative adjectives, generally cannot function as predicates independently. In Chinese, it is challenging for adjectives to form a predicate-focus structure with a single adjective. It was demonstrated that both qualitative adjectives and ‘XA’ stative adjectives require sufficient informational content semantically and adequate structural complexity formally for their use as predicates. Reduplicated forms not only add semantic content but also create structurally complex forms. Consequently, ‘XA’ stative adjectives in their reduplicated forms can naturally form predicate-focus structures. However, when ‘XA’ stativeadjectives are used as predicates without reduplication, they employ certain strategies, which can be broadly categorized into the following three types: (1) Adding supplementary elements to the ‘XA’stative adjective, (2) Using the ‘XA’ stative adjective accompanied by other predicative elements, or (3) Employing the ‘XA’ stative adjective in subject-predicate focus structures, where it functions asthe predicate of the sub-subject. The first type involves expanding the predicate focus structure by adding supplementary elements, thereby forming a larger structure. The second type forms a largerpredicate structure with other predicative elements, making the entire predicate the focus. The third type includes not only the stative adjective but also the preceding subject within the focus domain, forming a sentence-focus structure.
