Abstract

This study closely analyzes the early novels of Xu Dishan set in the Nanyang to examine how anti-feudal values, such as free love, monogamy, and women’s independence, were realized within the spatiotemporal context of the Nanyang during the modern era. Modernity during the New Culture era of China was reconstituted through the “uncivilized” nature of the Nanyang, its enablers, and cultural capital. This process reflects how Asian women cultivated a sense of place in the Nanyang through the formation of relationships, attitudes, emotions, capital, and values. Furthermore, this suggests that the pursuit of modernity may inherently contain elements of anti-modernity. Primarily, this study contributes to diversifying existing research perspectives that approach the Nanyang as an exotic spatial background, focusing on themes such as realist or romantic methodologies and the influence of religion. Furthermore, it extends into research on cultural practices of “inter-Asia” or “trans-Asia,” wherein newly constructed relationships, attitudes, senses, and values are shared, transcending gender, nationality, and race, enabling interconnectedness and expansion.
