Abstract

Andreas Eckardt (1884~1974) lived in Korea for over two decades from 1909, conducting research in Korean language, literature, music, and art. Through his publications and lectures, he played a major role in introducing Korean culture to Germany. His 1929 work, The History of Korean Art, is recognized as the first comprehensive study of Korean art written in a Western language. Produced during the Japanese colonial period, it aimed to situate Korean art within global discourse and highlight its distinctiveness. While praised in Korea, German art historians criticized Eckardt for his lack of art historical competence, absence of academic Integrity, confusing and unsystematic analytical methods, and Insufficient scholarly value leading to his exclusion from German East Asian art history. Questions have also been raised about the credibility of his autobiographical claims - such as receiving his dotorate summa cum laude, holding the title of “professor,” and advising the Japanese government - none of which are supported by official German records. Also for the first time in Korea, this research into his activities during the Third Reich suggests possible ties to Nazi cultural policy, potentially explaining his rejection for a university post in 1946 and the motivations of an art historian who preferred to be known by the name “Andre or André” after the World War II. On the 140th anniversary of his birth, a critical reassessment of both his scholarly contributions and the political contexts that shaped his career is necessary to move beyond the mythologized image of Eckardt in Korea.
