Abstract

This study aims at inquiring the formative attributes of the Korean aesthetics, which has been continued even before the westernisation, and seeking the root of the formative tradition of the Korean aesthetics, which has been maintained irrespective of the historical and cultural rupture, by comparing the Korean abstract, which has emerged after the westernistion, and the traditional aesthetics of Korea. The visual arts of Korea has experienced a drastic cultural transformation, which not many societies have experienced, with the Japanese Colonialism and the Division after the Korean War. There was a sudden transition from the traditional aesthetics to the western aesthetics in the realm of visual arts, and accordingly new values suddenly replaced the old ones. This study seeks the similarity between the traditional formative expression and that of the Korean aesthetics, and investigate the formative attributes of the Korean visual art which did not vanish irrespective of the cultural and epochal rupture which the Korean society has experienced. For the purpose, first of all, "A History of Korean Art" by Andrea Eckhardt was referred. Particularly, he explained the beauty of Korea with the terms, 'temperance and simplicity' and 'fullness and division', focusing on the beauty of simpleness. According to him, the key formative attribute of Korean arts is that temperance and simplicity, and fullness and division become one another in harmony without conflict. This trait can also be found in the formative composition in the Korean abstract arts. It seems monochromic but the forms don't look monochromic, small elements are arranged in accord and that arrangement create unique visual rhythm, and the changes, not so grandiose but not monotonous either, of the texture on surface gets clearer and clearer as one gets closer to paintings. This means that the formative attributes of the traditional aesthetics of Korea has been continued in the formative expression of the Korean Abstract Art.
