Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explore the way children use mental state terms as they engage in sociodramatic play and to investigate the associations between sociodramatic play, the use of mental state terms and the theory of mind of 4-year-old children. This research focuses on sixty four 4-year-old children in attendance at daycare centers in Seoul and KyungGi-Do. Analyses of the subjects’ speech during sociodramatic play reveals 1) that mental state terms were used in about 20% of their speech. Terms signifying desire appeared most frequently, followed by terms depicting emotion and cognitive states; 2) a positive correlation was found between the frequency of sociodramatic play and the use of mental state terms. Moreover, the level of sociodramatic play showed a positive correlation with speech depicting desire, emotional, and cognitive state terms 3) there was an overall significant correlation between utterances of mental state terms in sociodramatic play and theory of mind. In sum, the study demonstrates that children tend to use metal state terms to express desire, attention, belief, and feeling states in sociodramatic play, and that these utterances of mental state terms correlate significantly with both the frequency and the level of sociodramatic play. The theory of mind also correlates with the use of mental state terms in sociodramatic play.
