Abstract

This study seeks to identify the meaning of the greeting between infants and their parents in modern society and the characteristics of infants’ bow behavior by examining them in their social and cultural contexts. To this purpose, I implemented participant observation by visiting infants’ households and then collected concrete and practical data. I tried to confirm the reliability of the analysis and explanation through the use of interviews with parents and video recordings. The data suggests that the infants’ bow behavior emerged as a result of imitating the behavior of parents’ bowing their heads. That is to say, parents assisted their children in learning to bow by using the bowing of their own heads as normal social behavior and appending the social and cultural meanings of the bow to their children’s imitating behavior. Infants then were guided to greater understanding by parents and other adults who combined the bowing behavior with the appropriate accompanying language. Their understanding was further deepened through their voluntary practice and repetition of the bow and its language. As well, infants gave positive notice about themselves with the bow and formed relationships with other, unfamiliar persons. In this manner, the bow became pleasant to both the children and the adults. This study thus leads to the generalization that infants’ imitation of bow behavior, reinforced in daily life by the combination of parents’ unconscious promoting behaviors, automatic practice, and parental expectations of good manners, becomes a practical behavior norm.
