Abstract

If the human being could not know themselves, the socratic motto 'know yourself' would be pointless in a sense. Faced with this problem, this study has as its objective to consider the mode as well as the possibility of self-cognition of human being explained especially in the Ennead V 3 of Plotinus. For this purpose this paper first analyze the condition and mode of self-cognition in a strict sense by considering the self-cognition of nous. According to Plotinus, the self-cognition in a proper sense could only occur, when the 'self' as a whole would be known by the 'self' as whole. It does not come about in the way the one part of the whole knows another part of it. Accordingly, self-cognition is considered as the operation proper to the pure, simple spiritual being for which knowing subject, known object and operation are not different, but same in every respect. It is, therefore, clear that it cannot be attributed to the human. It is proper for 'us' (hemin) who are identified with 'discursive reason'(dianoia) to know extramental things. 'We' are too busy knowing them to reflect ourselves. But through nous, which is transcendental principle of dianoia, 'we' come to know that we are discursive reason and stem from nous. And by becoming nous, we know nous and 'true self' in it. It means that the human should become a totally different being sc. nous in order to know himself. And that is the mode of self-cognition available to human being. But now the 'self' whom the human comes to know through self-knowledge is no more her 'self'. The mode of self-cognition of human being is put in a paradoxical situation.
