Abstract

The aim of this paper is to show that according to Aquinas the self-cognition essentially characterizes the spiritual being as such and that it holds true not only for the divine intellect, but also for all intellectual beings including human intellect. But that is not to say that all intellectual beings have the same perfection and mode of self-cognition. This paper shows that God as subsisting ‘intellection’ always knows Himself through His essence, is self-cognition itself and also knows things other than Himself through self-cognition. The angels who are - although finite- pure spiritual beings, also knows themselves through their essences. They also know other things through their knowledge of themselves, insofar as the intelligible species through which they come to know other things are co-natural with their essences. The human intellect as intellect can be said to know itself through its essence even before it knows material things, because it is always present to itself on pre-reflexive stage. But the original self-reference of human intellect needs to be developed into the self-cognition on the conscious level by mediation of object-cognition, which explains a finitude of human intellect resulting from its unity with body.
