Abstract

This article is to compare Descartes's view of passion with Hegel‘s. They were same philosophical attitude in respect with accentuating reason, universal order or system. But they did not agree with Stoics who suggested to control passion with reason. And each of Descartes and Hegel has philosophical plan and method of their own. Also From this their opinion to ethics is easily supposed to be different. This article will examine the ethical meaning of 'habit' and 'generosity' that is made by the difference of their philosophical methods. Descartes's method is to request the providence of god. But Hegel asserts that the providence is realized with moments of the world and can be explained. Descartes's metaphysic remains at Stoic formalism concerned to passion and its control, yet Hegel overcomes Descartes's Metaphysic and mediates between the providence of god and an individual. In respect with ethics Hegel considers the relations in which individuals must be parted. In Descartes's philosophy the problems of passion arise from the lack of thought and will. But Hegel considers passion as to be unified with reason and the problems of passion is the moments in the process of sublation to an universal individual. The difference between Descartes and Hegel in the study of passion evokes the tension between philosophy and personal life. Hegel seems to complete Descartes's metaphysics. However Descartes makes us attent to passion as considering the concrete life of a person because he recognize the limit of science and the need of behavior to live one's life in that limit. although he does not intent. Descartes's reflection on passion is more suggestive than Hegel's at present. Because no universal philosophical system can be declared to solve the problem of passion until now. Descartes give us notice what is the starting point to study passion.
