Abstract
The overarching goals of this paper are as follows. First, it is to explain Descartes’ and Malebranche's theories of the passions by comparing their agreements and differences so that for philosophers who are interested in the subject to find out more easily what their theories are. Second, it is to further the understanding of the two philosophers’ overall philosophy by locating their theories of the passions in their overall philosophical systems. In order to understand the two philosophers’ theories of the passions, it is necessary to understand the nature of causation, the causal ability and interaction of the mind and body, the relationship between passions and actions, the physiology of the body, and methods of controlling the passions. Based on these two goals, it will be understood, first, what led them to hold different views on the passions despite the fact that Malebranche is considered as an adamant ‘Cartesian’, and second, the subject – the passions - to which much attention has not been paid in early modern philosophy will open the way to better understand the unique philosophy of each of the two philosophers.
