Abstract

In 1910's, while the 'new fiction' of 1900's was withering, the Korean version of Japanese 'domestic fiction' enjoys its popularity both in literature and theater. Its narrative conventions differs from earlier 'new fiction''s conventions. Domestic fictions employ young female heroines, make them commit sins such as adultery and murder, give them a series of hardship and agony, and finally allow them the chances of repentance and rebirth. Such narratives expected the response of tears and sympathy from readers-at the same time spectators-, but the expectation could not be satisfied for first days. The familiar reading convention which was adopted for 1900's 'new fiction' was interest and amusement, then it needed readjustment to enjoy 1910's domestic fictions. Different from the heroines of 1900's fictions, the main characters of 1910's domestic fictions are originally sinners, and experience pains of guilty consciousness and subsequent neurotic disorders, and appeals only to the readers' sympathy which forgive them on the basis of 'original and universal sins of humankind'. The 1910's fictions adopt the motif of the seperation and reunion of a mother and her children to strengthen the sympathy dynamics, which forms a contrast the motif of the union of young male and female in 1900's fictions. We can approach to 1910's literature through these narrative inventions of domestic fictions.
