Abstract
This study was conducted to present practical strategies for knowledge education in the music curriculum focused on Korean traditional music, at a time when deep conceptual understanding is emphasized as a core element of competency-based education. The proposed directions for applying knowledge education in music to foster competencies are as follows based on the literature review: (1) developing academic knowledge through a balance between context-dependent and context-independent knowledge, considering both the universality and specificity of music; (2) promoting a balanced development of conceptual knowledge related to music concepts and procedural knowledge related to musical performance processes and methods; (3) cultivating transferable procedural knowledge through reflection in the music performance process; (4) fostering interdisciplinary knowledge through connections with domains beyond music; and (5) developing epistemic knowledge by linking musical activities to real-life contexts to experience as musicians. Based on these directions, three lesson cases were presented: First lesson, focusing on tori and jangdan; Second lesson, centered on expressive techniques in pansori (sigimsae); and Third lesson, emphasizing jangdan and malbutimsae. The study concludes with two emphases: first, a broad range of knowledge—including conceptual knowledge—should be addressed in music education; second, in addition to concepts rooted in Western music, Korean traditional musical concepts must be treated as essential knowledge, and meta-concepts should be employed to enable their transfer across diverse contexts.
