Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore a feasible design model for implementing inquiry-based music units in public elementary schools by considering the applicability of the 2022 revised National Curriculum and the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP). This study investigates to propose an inquiry unit design grounded in the intrinsic identity of music education rather than simple interdisciplinary integration. A comparative analysis was conducted on the IB PYP Transdisciplinary units of Inquiry (UOI) template, the single-subject design framework, and actual IB PYP unit cases implemented in Korean public schools. Based on this analysis, commonalities and differences were identified to develop a pedagogically applicable and integrated design plan. The findings suggest that by integrating the three domains of music—performing, appreciating, and creating—around the explicit concept of change, students can be guided to construct conceptual understanding of musical elements such as sound blending, dynamics, and timbre through self-directed inquiry. This study presents a practical model for curriculum reconstruction that embraces the conceptual thinking framework of the IB PYP while preserving the identity of music education. It is expected that this design will help students think, feel, and construct meaning through music, fostering their growth into creative and reflective learners required in future society.
