Abstract
This study aims to explore a concept-based inquiry unit design for deep learning of Korean traditional music. Based on literature research, the concept-based curriculum was an enhanced and developed version of the subject-centered curriculum, emphasizing conceptual understanding and transfer to real-life situations. In music education, a 'conceptual approach' based on Bruner's 'Structure of Knowledge' emerged, but to compensate for the limitations of this structure, there was a need to deeply understand concepts through the structure of the performing process. The concept-based inquiry unit design for ideep learning of Korean traditional music targeted fifth-grade elementary school students and consisted of four unit sub-topics across a total of 20 class sessions. This sample unit was designed to help learners form Korean traditional music concepts such as Jangdan and Hanbae through participating in and exploring the performance of Hansam(traditional Korean costume sleeve) movements, and to understand 'Change, Relationship, Identity,' which are comprehensive, abstract, and universal characteristics. The unit was designed so that by the end of the learning process, students would arrive at the generalization that 'the dance expressed by humans amidst musical changes is related to their unique culture and identity. This research is an initial study on concept-based inquiry learning for deep learning in Korean traditional music, therefore, future research on validity verification and research on cultivating subject expertise to design units should be supported. Therefore, it is expected that by actively conducting in deep learning of Korean traditional music as intended by the curriculum, students will be able to comprehensively understand the concepts of Korean traditional music, rather than fragmented knowledge.
