Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore effective singing instruction methods that take into account the development of elementary school students’ vocal mechanisms and to propose singing instruction plans that are suitable for the characteristics of each grade. To this end, this study examined the vocal mechanism and developmental process of elementary school students, and based on this, explored vocalization instruction methods using sacred texts and pitch control methods using respiratory energy. Based on this, it presented singing instruction plans for each grade group to accurately express the pitch of musical pieces with correct vocalization. The research results showed that the singing instruction method based on the vocal mechanism could be applied in an appropriate manner according to the vocal characteristics of each grade group. Specifically, students in the first and second grade groups can acquire correct singing habits by learning to use their breath while discovering their singing voice and perceiving the sense of middle register. Students in the 3rd and 4th grade groups can learn the sense of register transition, strengthen their breathing energy, expand their singing range, and sing in accurate pitch. Students in the 5th and 6th grade groups can learn to sing flexibly while acquiring a sense of resonance using the head registers and use breathing energy to express various musical expressions of the music. Until now, singing instruction for elementary school students has generally been conducted in the same way for all grades, but this study is significant in that it has presented differentiated teaching methods for each grade by understanding the vocal changes of elementary school students. Therefore, this study will be able to help students who have difficulty singing due to the inability to properly control the changing vocal mechanism during growth. We hope that this study will help improve students' vocalization ability and singing skills, and will be useful as a practical guide for teachers who teach singing in the field.
