Abstract
The purpose of this study is to apply an action research methodology to improve a Korean traditional music education program for middle-aged and older adults as lifecycle-based cultural and arts education and to analyze changes in both participants and instructors. The research procedure was structured based on Kemmis and McTaggart’s action research model, following the plan–act and observe–reflect cycle, and was conducted over three iterations. To ensure the validity and reliability of the study, various data collection methods were employed, including class observations, participant and instructor interviews, surveys, reflective teaching logs, and participant-generated materials analysis. The findings of the study are as follows: First, middle-aged and older participants preferred a combination of experiential activities and in-depth learning, leading to program improvements. Second, participants gradually engaged more actively in the educational process, experiencing emotional satisfaction and strengthened social connections. Third, instructors shifted from the role of knowledge transmitters to collaborative facilitators who co-designed learning experiences with participants. These findings suggest that action research is an effective approach for enhancing Korean traditional music education programs for middle-aged and older adults. This study empirically confirms the practical application of action research as a tool for improving Korean traditional music education programs. It highlights the potential for action research to support the sustainable and systematic development of music education tailored to middle-aged and older participants.
