Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop essential questions in music subject and to frame unit plans using them to realize the meaning of the 2022 revised music curriculum that emphasizes students' understanding centered on big ideas. In this study, the process of analyzing achievement standards was carried out to develop essential questions. Based on the first stage of the backward design model, the content system in the music curriculum was identified and [6 music 03-03], one of the achievement standards, was analyzed to extract enduring understanding, core knowledge, and skills. Then, based on this, essential questions were developed. In addition, using these questions, a music unit called 'Repeat and Change' was presented through the procedure of the backward design model. The example unit using essential questions provides a framework for designing music lessons that will deepen students’ understanding. Also, this unit is not a step-by-step method, but shows how to reorganize the unit plan within a broad focus and transfer what is learned in music to other subject areas. The content of the lesson plan is not fixed, but as the unit progresses, essential questions can be reviewed or revised to accommodate students' need, and and other aspects of teaching and learning, such as learning content, activities, materials, etc., can be appropriately modified.. This study will contribute to helping learners clearly recognize the learning goals and leading them to actively participate in inquiry learning and higher-order thinking. However, a follow-up study is needed to verify the educational effect of the example music unit plans by applying it to the field.
