Abstract
As countries strengthen economic security in response to global crises and supply chain disruptions, the need for industrial policies to boost domestic production capacity has been re-emphasized. However, policies supporting specific industries may distort markets and limit competition. On the other hand, R&D, as a key driver of innovation, when concentrated in certain industries, may hinder diverse combinations and negatively impact innovation output from Schumpeterian perspective. This study empirically analyzes the impact of industrial R&D disparity on innovation output using data from 2002 to 2017. The findings show that, by 2017, South Korea exhibited the highest R&D disparity, with the U.S. and Japan also experiencing increased disparity. Regression analysis results revealed that higher R&D disparity negatively affects innovation output in the country level, suggesting the need for balanced investment across various industries.
