Abstract
In pursuit of carbon neutrality, major countries worldwide have been undertaking significant initiatives to transition to and promote a hydrogen-based economy. This study investigates trends in hydrogen energy research using data from 3,595 academic papers published between 2004 and 2023. The analysis employs topic modeling(BERTopic), large language models(LLM), and the PCMCI(Peter and Clark Momentary Conditional Independence) methodology. Fifteen research topics were identified, with quarterly time series data used to trace evolving research priorities and analyze the dynamic interactions and causal relationships between topics. The results reveal that each topic exerts either positive(+) or negative(-) influences on others, thereby shaping various research areas. For example, the topic 'Development of hydrogen storage and utilization systems using renewable energy' is strongly influenced by the topic 'Research trends on hydrogen engine performance and combustion characteristics' from an earlier time point, while receiving negative influences from topics such as 'Research on hydrogen adsorption and storage mechanisms.' By identifying these causal interactions, this study aims to predict future research directions and derive critical policy implications.
